Some of the terms may be confusing, but when you're trying to decipher the cost difference between two identical-looking backpacks, pay attention to the different materials. In this article we will provide an overview and comparison of common kinds of material used to make a backpack.
Nylon Vs. Polyester.
Let’s start with polyester and nylon.
Polyester is a synthetic fiber that has been around since the 1940s, and is by far the most commonly used material in SKYSPER backpacks. Nylon, on the other hand, was invented in 1935, but didn't become commercially available until 1954. It's produced from crude oil and has become increasingly popular as a material for backpacks in recent years.
The biggest advantage of nylon is its durability. Because it resists water and won't lose elasticity over time, it can last for decades with proper care. The downside of nylon is that it doesn't breathe very well—it's not a good choice for hiking or mountaineering, as you'll get very sweaty if you wear it in warm weather. If you want to hike or climb but want nylon's toughness and resilience, look for a nylon ripstop fabric instead.
Polyester is often blended with cotton or other fabrics to add softness and allow for more breathability. Its main benefit is its versatility—it's strong enough to be used for backpacks and light enough to be used for swimwear and workout gear—so if you're buying a backpack for sports or schoolwork, you might prefer polyester. What do the D and T stand for?
Generally, whenever people talk about nylon and polyester, you’ll hear a number with a “D” or “T” after it (for example 600D or 210T). What do the D and T stand for?
The first number of the code represents the thread count or denier of the fabric. Denier is a unit of measurement used to express the fineness of fibers such as nylon and polyester. The higher the denier, the finer the fiber. The second number in the code stands for something called the filament twist, which is a measurement of how tightly twisted together the fibers in nylon or polyester are.
For example, 210T refers to 2-ply yarn that has a 2-thread twist. In other words, this is what would be considered standard nylon or polyester material. The “D” in 600D indicates that this is single-ply material. As you can see from this example, higher numbers mean that there are more threads per square inch (because there are more plies), which gives you stronger fabric.
Nylon fabrics are generally made with thread counts that are multiples of 70. For example, a fabric with a thread count of 70D, 210D (200D), 420D (400D), 840D and 1680D are all nylon.
Polyester fabrics are generally made with thread counts that are multiples of 75. For example, a fabric with a thread count of 75D, 150D, 300D, 600D, 900D (1000D), 1200D and 1800D are polyester.
210D Vs. 420D Nylon
The higher the denier number, the thicker and stronger the material will be. It is also heavier to carry if you use lighter fabric like 210 denier or lower.
For SKYSPER backpacks, we chose to use 210D nylon to make them more durable. 210D nylon is a type of nylon with a denier count between 200 and 400. It is often used in bags and luggage because it's great at resisting abrasion, which means that it won't get holes easily no matter how much it's carried around.
210D nylon is sturdier than polyester while also having less stretch than polyester, which makes it a great choice for any bag that needs to hold heavy stuff or be compact when the user doesn't need the space.
Our iShell30 packable backpacks are made of 210D nylon, so they can carry heavy things and still fit in a pocket when they're not being used. The fabric is also strong enough to resist tearing and punctures, even when sharp things are inside.
300D Poly Vs. 600D Poly
There are two main materials used to make SKYSPER backpacks: 300D and 600D polyester.
600D polyester is a standard weight fabric that offers great protection from both water and abrasion. It's strong yet thin enough to not add much weight to your pack.
The 600D material used in SKYSPER backpacks of LANTC series, BOGDA series and TENGGER series is coated with 800mm PU and is strong enough to take some serious wear and tear and keep your belongings safe inside the bag. It's thick enough to provide a great protective layer between your things and anything sharp or hard they might come into contact with while you're carrying them around, and it's also thin enough that it doesn't weigh down your pack too much.
The 300D is a thick and durable material that is used to make our backpacks. We use the 300D in many of our backpacks because it provides more protection than 600D, but it's still thin enough to provide protection without adding too much extra weight.
300D comes in large varieties of colors and patterns, which allow for many applications of the material. From hiking backpacks to school bags, the function and style that come with these qualities will make it your go-to choice for all your carrying needs.
The material used to make both the X6 and the iSport65 is a 300D polyester material. It looks stylish, but what's really great about it is that it has the durability for active people.
